Knowledge is Power...

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious...

Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Willing is not enough; we must do...

They say Knowledge is Power, and I am a true believer in this be it "good" or "bad" either way it is up to you the individual to deal with it in the best way possible.

As a woman we all have to do or should do certain yearly checkups after reaching a certain age.  I am not very keen on going to the doctor, but I do recommend the yearly visit to your OB-GYN.   Have your regular Pap Smear test just to make sure all is good.

Another yearly exam is the mammogram, and this also is after a certain age.   A mammogram is a low-dose x-ray exam of the breasts to look for changes that are not normal. The results are recorded on x-ray film or directly into a computer for a doctor called a radiologist to examine.
A mammogram allows the doctor to have a closer look for changes in breast tissue that cannot be felt during a breast exam. It is used for women who have no breast complaints and for women who have breast symptoms, such as a change in the shape or size of a breast, a lump, nipple discharge, or pain. Breast changes occur in almost all women. In fact, most of these changes are not cancer and are called “benign,” but only a doctor can know for sure. Breast changes can also happen monthly, due to your menstrual period.

Being conscientious about my health and because I know I have cystic breast tissue I have been very meticulous and make sure I do my yearly exams.  This year was no different.  Started about 3 weeks ago and of course the mammogram showed "suspicious"  tissues.  Always does due to the cysts.  As usual the next step is a breast ultrasound.

A breast ultrasound uses sound waves to make a picture of the tissues inside the breast.  It can show all areas of the breast, including the area closest to the chest wall, which can be hard to study with a mammogram.
Breast ultrasound does not use X-rays or other potentially harmful types of radiation.

Breast Ultrasound Facts

So as usual, I also get the breast ultrasound.  I am expecting to hear the usual...cystic breast tissues bla, bla, bla....   This time that was not the case, the radiologist sat me down in her office and with a serious face reviewed her findings with me.  To put it mildly she did not like what she saw.  After a half hour in her office I had my next step to this procedure.

I was now looking at a breast biopsy of two areas although more areas were of mild concern, these were the most pressing for now.  A lot of things go through your mind at the time, but the one that stands out is Cancer.

I have to say though not happy with the outcome of the ultrasound, I am of the type who would rather know and know fast so that whatever the outcome is I can then deal with it.  I know many who would rather pretend all is good and not know facts.  Not me.

Biopsy was scheduled for yesterday.  The process itself was fairly easy and if you have a good doctor that's even better.  My only fear was the needle and due to some perverse sense of mine, I have to look when he pokes me with the needle.  Hate it, but what can I say can't stop looking.  I just want to know everything that's going on.  Needless to say I asked a million questions per minute and the doctor was good in keeping me informed of everything step by step.  Made the process so much better...like I said, Knowledge is Power.

The process itself lasted about 20 minutes.  A few pokes with the needle some suctioning and I was all ready to go home.  Now to wait a couple of days for the results.  At least I know what the worst case scenario is and how to attack it.  Right now I am not scared.  Arvid and my family are a lot more worried than I am right now.  I know that whatever the outcome is I have the best support team around me..Arvid and my family.  Knowing that I will deal with anything.  Of course I am hoping it will only be cysts again..

You hope for the best, but plan for the worst..

If we value the pursuit of knowledge, we must be free to follow wherever that search may lead us. The free mind is no barking dog to be tethered on a ten-foot chain....

Just The Way It Is....

I usually get my stuff from people who promised somebody else that they would keep it a secret....

Just back from the Blues Festival in Tampa where aside from listening to good music, I also enjoyed reading a couple of books.  I love to read and I get caught up in the book and the moment and each time I read a book I feel like as if I were transported into this world if only for a brief moment.

This weekend my books were mystery and suspense mixed with some intrigue.  What was amusing and was the way these characters lied to each other.  It was so believable and not only because it was in the book, but because it reminded me of people in real life.  Some I know very well and others I will call acquaintances.

I found it amusing just because my girlfriend is the kind that can tell you anything with a straight face even though you know it's a lie. She tells it in such a way that I always end up laughing.  She tells facts graphically and lies graphically.  Sometimes it's hard to distinguish one form the other.  I don't claim to promote this behaviour, but.... None is meant to hurt, but I think it's her way of getting attention.  She lives alone, she does not date much and she is quite often at home and bored most of the time.  When we get together it's time to let loose and see who can upstage the other.  She always wins!  It's all in good fun and never aimed at anyone just entertainment.  I love my outings with her.  Always fun and with the most unexpected of outcomes.

We all have secrets.  Things that may be too personal to share with anyone or just because we rather not share it with anyone.  Arvid says that I am the last person he knows who can keep a secret because "you just don't know how."  It's true.  I don't like secrets.  I don't like surprises.  I like to know and when I know I like to share with my family.   Not sure what's so terrible with this anyway.

Arvid on the other hand loves secrets and surprises.  We once went to North Carolina without telling my parents.  We, well he surprised my mom at the mall.  Spooked the life out of her.  To this day she talks about it.  One year we went to Texas because he wanted to surprise my sister and family...they were needless to say, very surprised.  So many times he has done this that now everyone knows him for his surprises.  My mom always says that Arvid is something else.   He always has something up his sleeves.  One year I visited my parents for 4 days in North Carolina.  When I came back he had bought himself a Mercedes SL500.  Said he was bored.  I never know what is going he will show up with next.

I believe that the secret to being happy is to tell as little as possible and if you have to just make sure you are telling it to the right person or persons....my mom is that person for me!  She knows all my "secrets"

To keep your secret is wisdom; but to expect others to keep it is folly...
There are no secrets better kept than the secrets that everybody
guesses.....

Mint Chocolate Chip Milk Shakes....

Can somebody please invent a straw that can actually be used on a milkshake...

If you love mint, chocolate and creamy ice cream, satisfy your cravings and make yourself a delicious chocolate chip mint milkshake.  It's a super treat any day or time of the year.  After a long day in the sun it is nice to come home to something delicious and fast to make. Chocolate chip milkshake is especially cool and refreshing on a hot summer day.  Many of those kind of days here in Florida so this is perfect for me all year round.  Just mix one up and treat yourself to something wonderfully delicious.

Recipe:

2 cups mint chocolate chip ice cream (one of Arvid's favorite)

1 cup milk

2 tablespoons whipped topping
1 tablespoon mini chocolate chips

Combine ice cream and milk in blender, blend until smooth
Pour into 2 glasses.  Topped with whipped topping; sprinkle with chocolate chips.

If you like the flavor of coffee, vary the recipe a bit by adding a spoonful of chilled coffee or mocha.
If you are concerned about the fat content substitute low fat or one percent milk for half and half.  The milkshake would not be as thick and creamy, but will still be delicious.

Go ahead, live dangerously and treat yourself to something decadent.  You will not regret it!

Accept what people offer. Drink their milkshakes. Take their love....

Tampa Bay Blues Festival...A Musical Weekend

Without music life would be a mistake....
Music is what feelings sound like...

There are 2 things we look forward to each year with anticipation.  The first is Tampa Bay Blues Festival will will be this weekend for 3 days.  Arvid and I have been going here for several years and as Arvid just said "it would take something real catastrophic for us not to make it to this festival."

Every year we reserve our hotel about 6 months in advance.  Together with The Chicago Blues Festivals, these two events are a must.  We may skip going to certain places, but never to these two.

What makes these festivals so very nice is that they are both in beautiful parks surrounded by the water.  The music is great, the ambiance is great and we meet many of our friends from the South  Florida Blues Society.

St. Petersburg...home of Tampa Bay Blues Festival

Arvid looks forward to a weekend without a laptop and as he says "NO PHONES."   When it comes to music Arvid comes alive like no one I know.  The Blues makes him happy and just seeing him acting so carefree makes me happy.   I love going to Tampa Bay Blues also because of the openness, the wonderful weather, and I get to read my book all day long while listening to music and nibbling on all sort of goodies.

Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself, in your way of thinking.

some of our best times are at Tampa Bay Blues

Being by the water we also get to watch the boats go by and also watch Dolphins swim by.  So far we have been lucky every year.  We are both pretty excited to be going best of all Brutus will be in the best of hands.  He is being cared by my very good friend who has been his pet sitter in Florida from the time we got him almost 6 years ago.  She is happy, we are happy and Brutus happy as well.....

Happiness comes when you believe in what you are doing,
know what you are doing, and love what you are doing.....

    Getting Smarter Beer After Beer....

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer...

I don't drink beer, never have, but does not mean that if you do something is wrong with you.  Actually you may be on the path to becoming smarter.  According to a study of the university of Illinois, "men who drink beer are smarter"  I heard this the other day while relaxing watching TV at home.  Of course I had to share it with Arvid who just looks at me wondering where I have been this whole time.  All he says was, "I have been trying to tell this to you for a long time now."

Arvid has a way of saying things that I have to either smile, strangle him or burst out laughing.  No exception here.  He then used this study to his advantage and said that now I should understand why it is that when the weekends come he needs a few beers.  I knew exactly where he was heading.  You see this weekend is the Tampa Bay Blues Festival.  He goes on to say that he will be getting extra smart in the next few days.

Arvid takes a baby aspirin every night for prevention.  I asked him "should I take a few for you for the next couple of days?"  He looks at me like I had gone crazy and finally replies, "nope this weekend I will be having my liquid vitamin = beer."  Arvid likes to tell this to me,

     I never met a pub I didn't like..

Well the weekend has begun already for us.  We are soon on our way to beautiful St. Petersburg, Florida.  Been waiting for this for an entire year now.  Brutus is well taken care of and there will be lots of beer at the festival.  Arvid happy, I'm happy and Brutus as well.  I don't do beer nor wine, but there it lots of fresh squeezed lemonade and most likely tomorrow I will have one of my favorite frozen drinks....

    Life is good.  Enjoy all!

I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts, and beer....

    Have a Good Weekend...

Without music, life would be a mistake...

Before I met Arvid I did enjoy music quite a bit, but it was more like listening to it on the radio, Cd's and maybe an occasional concert.  After I met Arvid my took on a whole new meaning as to what music is all about.

Today one of the biggest pleasures and extravaganza in our lives is music.  We travel all over to just hear the music.  Arvid loves the Blues.  I have learnt to enjoy it quite a bit, but no one will ever get into it as I see Arvid do.  Music just transports him into another world where he is completely at ease and peace.  I look at him and I see a man who has all that he needs and I'm happy right next to him.  Arivd enjoys to just sit down, have a beer turn on the jukebox and listen to music when we are home.  Brutus has grown used to the music and to this routine, and also enjoys it very much

This weekend we will be just enjoying the music in beautiful St. Petersburg Florida.   Hope everyone has a great weekend and see you here soon.

Music was my refuge. I could crawl into the space
between the notes and curl my back to loneliness....

    Just Funny......

You know the world is going crazy when the best rapper is a white guy, the best golfer is a black guy, the tallest guy in the NBA is Chinese, the Swiss hold the America's Cup, France is accusing the U.S. of arrogance, Germany doesn't want to go to war, and the three most powerful men in America are named Bush, Dick, and Colon.  Need I say more?

OK so this will appear to be too long to read, but if you want a good laugh I recommend you take the extra time to read it!  I got this from a friend and at first I wanted to ignore, but once I started to read it I was caught up and before long was really enjoying myself.  Hope you do as well!  Remember, through humor, you can soften some of the worst blows that life delivers. And once you find laughter, no matter how painful your situation might be, you can survive it.

    GARDEN SNAKES CAN BE  DANGEROUS...

Snakes also known as Garter Snakes  (Thamnophissirtalis) can be dangerous
Yes, grass snakes, not  rattlesnakes. Here's why.
    A couple in Port Orange
Florida, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold spell, the wife
was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect them from a possible  freeze.
It turned out that a little green garden grass snake  was hidden in one of
the plants. When it had warmed up, it slithered  out and the wife saw it go
    under the sofa.

She let out a very  loud scream.
Roger (who was taking a shower) ran out  into the living room naked to see
what the problem was. She told him  there was a snake under the sofa.
He got down on the floor on  his hands and knees to look for it. About that
time the family dog  came and cold-nosed him on the behind. He thought the
snake had  bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor.

His  wife thought he had had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told
him to lie still and called an ambulance.
The attendants  rushed in, would not listen to his protests, loaded him on
the  stretcher, and started carrying him out.
About that time, the  snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency
Medical  Technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher. That's when
the man broke his leg and why he is still in the  hospital.

The wife still had the problem of the snake in the  house, so she called on
a neighbor who volunteered to capture the  snake. He armed himself with a
rolled-up newspaper and began poking  under the couch.. Soon he decided it
was gone and told the woman,  who sat down on the sofa in relief.

But while relaxing, her  hand dangled in between the cushions, where she
felt the snake  wriggling around. She screamed and fainted, the snake rushed
    back  under the sofa.

The neighbor man, seeing her lying there  passed out, tried to use CPR to
    revive her.

The neighbor's  wife, who had just returned from shopping at the grocery
store, saw  her husband's mouth on the woman's mouth and slammed her husband
in  the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out  and
cutting his scalp to a point where it needed  stitches.

The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and  she saw her neighbor lying
on the floor with his wife bending over  him, so she assumed that the snake
had bitten him. She went to the  kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey,
and began pouring it down  the man's throat.
By now, the police had arrived.

    Breathe  here...
They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey,  and assumed that a
drunken fight had occurred. They were about to  arrest them all, when the
women tried to explain how it all happened  over a little garden snake!
The police called an ambulance,  which took away the neighbor and his
    sobbing wife.

Now, the  little snake again crawled out from under the sofa and one of the
policemen drew his gun and fired at it. He missed the snake and hit  the leg
of the end table. The table fell over, the lamp on it  shattered and, as the
bulb broke, it started a fire in the  drapes.
The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and  fell through the
window into the yard on top of the family dog who,  startled, jumped out and
raced into the street, where an oncoming  car swerved to avoid it and
smashed into the parked police  car.
Meanwhile, neighbors saw the burning drapes and called  in the fire
department. The firemen had started raising the fire  ladder when they were
halfway down the street. The rising ladder  tore out the overhead wires, put
out the power, and disconnected the  telephones in a ten-square city block
area (but they did get the  house fire out).
Time passed! Both men were discharged from  the hospital, the house was
repaired, the dog came home, the police  acquired a new car and all was
    right with their world.
A  while later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a  cold
snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought  they should
bring in their plants for the night.
And that's  when he shot her.
P.S. Its been a  long time since I laughed that hard at an
    email...................

    Happy 50th Anniversary...

I love you - those three words have my life in them....

Nothing in today's world is guaranteed and from the looks of it, unfortunately, neither are marriages.  When we get married it is with the promise of being together forever and ever in good times and bad times.  We all go into it with this in mind never for one instance thinking that it may not work out.

My parents celebrate 50 years of marriage on April 9th.  Yes, not all the years were rosy for them.  There was a lot of hardship during their early years, but my mom and dad always had each other.  When it got rough like it did many a times they would just sit back and remind themselves of all the good things they had going for them, their dreams and their plans of a better life.

Like many of their generation, my parents were very young when they got married.  Barely kids themselves.  Never having the chances nor opportunities we have today to experience life, to travel, go to college or to do so many things we want to before marriage and before starting a family.

Back then that was how it was.  You got married you had children and you raised a family.  Well they did that and they did much more.  Among other things, mom and dad put five daughters and themselves through college, they paid for 5 daughters' weddings and to this day they are always there for us and for anything we need.  They also have 9 grandchildren whom they adore and who also adore them.

Looking at my parents today I marvel at how strong their relationship is.  The respect and love they have for each other is something I want to experience for years and years and years to come with Arvid.  I know they have lived through some very hard times, they were separated from their daughters for 4 years, a choice they had to make in order to provide us with a better life.  For each and every of those four years I missed them terribly even though I was only 4 years old.  In my heart I knew that no one would ever take the place of my mom and dad and every day of those four years I waited together with my sisters for them to come and take us home with them.

One day finally it happened we were all together again.  One big happy family.  The four years we were apart we lived with my grandmother.  We could not have asked for anyone better to care for us and to love us.

    with Max the eldest grandchild

To my mom and dad, I would like to wish you both a Happy Anniversary.  From your five daughters, their spouses and children you are both loved dearly because you have taught us all what it is to love, respect and to always be truthful to ourselves.  May you have many, many more years together...

May the love you have for each other never die.

Today as both of you look back with happiness and pride

Upon the Fifty cherished years that you've spent side by side,

May every memory that you share of dreams you've seen come true,

Help make this special Golden day a happy one for you!

      I love you both dearly

Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, While loving someone deeply gives you courage....

    Easter Weekend...

Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted not simply in terms of things, but in terms of ideals...

The weather has been great and still is. We are healthy, happy and always having a good time. For me it's the perfect recipe for a good weekend!

Also want to wish everyone a Happy Easter. May you have a relaxing time with your loved ones, and remember Easter is the demonstration of God that life is essentially spiritual and timeless.

The great gift of Easter is hope – Christian hope which makes us have that confidence in God, in his ultimate triumph, and in his goodness and love, which nothing can shake....

    Visit to the Doctor's Office..

A doctor who cannot take a good history and a patient who cannot give one are in danger of giving and receiving bad treatment....

My doctor gave me six months to live, but when I couldn't pay the bill he gave me six months more..

waiting to be called into the "room"

Going to the doctor just for a regular check up has become quite an ordeal lately.  A few days ago, I visited my doctor just for a yearly check up, but before I even got into the "room" there were hundreds of questions that needed to be answered and piles of paperwork to be filled out.  You have to go at least 30 to 45 minutes ahead of your appointment time.  That's OK.

So maybe I am not the most patient of persons, at least that is what Arvid keeps telling me all the time.  I know that going to the doctor involves a process and like everyone else I know there is nothing you can do about it, but when the questions become irrelevant that sure get me a bit annoyed.

For instance, what difference does it make where I was born or if I have a fear of falling or if I use an assisted device?  All I am having is a mammogram for Pete's sake.  To the assisted device question I told the girl that the only assisted device I have is Arvid.  She looked at me and said "what is an Arvid?"

Another thing that really bothers me is that we have health insurance yet it seems like as if just because of that I get charged even more.  I don't understand the health care system.  Seems like if I don't have insurance my out of pocket money is much less.

Example, I need to take another test.  My insurance does not cover it because our deductible is way too high.  The doctor's office gave me a quote of over $3500 for the test.  Of course I'm outraged.  I then decided to shop around a little on my own and what would you know?  I found out I can have the exact same procedure done for half the price.

For this next test I was again submitted to hundreds of addition questions, but this time the girl said to me "the questions are pertinent" and they were.  I am really happy that we are relatively healthy, we actually have health insurance (although we seem to always have to pay out of pocket) and that even though I gripe about a few things I know that we are much more fortunate than many who have no health insurance and unfortunately have lots more of health issues to cope with.

A day does not go by without me realizing how much I have to be thankful for.

Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough..

The patient does not care about your science; what he wants to know is, can you cure him...

    California on my Mind....

There is no past that we can bring back by longing for it. There is only an eternally new now that builds and creates itself out of the Best as the past withdraws....
    Lake Arrowhead
    a favorite spot of mine

You ever get the feeling where all you can think about is just taking off on a mini vacation?  Well lately I have been thinking more and more about us going away for a short trip and the place that comes most to my mind is California.

As one went to Europe to see the living past, so one must visit Southern California to observe the future....

Not sure why, but all the books I have been reading lately are based in California.  Most of the shows we saw on TV were filmed in California and the fact that it has been way too long since I have been back to the place that was once home for me makes me feel a little nostalgic.

    Mom, dad and I
    many years ago in California

I love California, at least the California I remember.  The mountains, the desert, the beaches all made it so beautiful.   Where life was good, the sun was always shining and palm trees lined the road to my home.  Don't get me wrong I like Florida very much, but something about California that I can't seem to get out of my mind.  Maybe going back I will realize that it's not the place I idolize.

    so long ago with Rima..
Well it's not in our plans to go there, but one can always hope that sooner rather than later California will be one of our destinations.  Arvid knows I want to go back so I know we will.  Just have to make the time for it, I want to show Arvid where I lived and go to some of my favorite places again...with him.

    me and my ducati

There is a third dimension to traveling, the longing for what is beyond...

In solitude we give passionate attention to our lives, to our memories, to the details around us...

    Birthdays...

Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.....

From the time we were very little my parents, (like most parent) made us feel even more special on this day.  This was the day we were given a so called "get out of jail free" card.  We were allowed to do just about anything we wanted (within limits of course), and best of all we did not have to do a single chore.

    great setting for lunch
before going to BB King's Concert

I love  birthdays.  We got dressed up,  our favorite food was made and we even had some pretty cool presents.  Growing up then was a lot different.  One present was what we got and we were HAPPY!

Today as a grown woman, I still enjoy the excitement of knowing it's my birthday. My expectations have changed.  What I look forward the most to is that card written from Arvid.  Just this and my day is complete.  Yes, I love the presents also, but I would give those up and still be happy with my special card.

    I always love to indulge

We have had a great weekend/day.  We started our celebration on Friday and did what we do best, have a great time, go to some very cool places, have delicious meals and just relax in each others company.

    I'm always happy with Arvid

    Love..
If today is your birthday, have a wonderful day.  You deserve it!

The best of times are those we spend together...just the three of us...
May you live to be 100 and may the last voice you hear be mine....
