6 Halloween Pet Safety Tips

Everyone is a moon and has a dark side, which he never shows to anybody...

Halloween is part of American Tradition.  It's a time of the year not only kids, but adults also look forward to as well. For kids it's that day when they are allowed to "collect" as much candy as they can and also eat as many as possible.  In recent years adults have derived as much fun out of Halloween as have kids.  Now with all the extravagant parties and costumes Halloween has become one of the "Holidays" I also like just so that we can go and gawk at people and their over the top costumes.  Living here in South Florida (and I bet many other places), all we have to do is pick a place and we will be in for a treat.....it's a night where the weird is even weirder. My kind of party...

Having Brutus in our lives means that there are some extra precautions we take as should all pet owners.  That's why when I read this article about pet saftey tips for halloween I thought it was good to share.

Halloween is a fantastic time of the year – but the costumes, candy, and parties we love can turn into horror movies for our furry friends, but fear not. Here is a list of safety tips will keep you and your pet safe until All Saints Day.

Dress up for success (or not at all). A pet costume can seem like a fantastic (and cute!) idea…to humans. Your pet might feel differently! Give costumes a test run before Halloween to see how your dog or cat reacts; if he's unhappy or afraid, consider a lower-key ghost-themed bandanna or collar instead, or skip it altogether.

Your pet may love dressing up, but make sure his outfit is safe and comfortable, and made from a non-flammable material. Costumes should allow him to see, hear, and breathe normally; avoid attire that covers his eyes and ears, and if his bark (or meow) sounds muffled, loosen or rethink the costume. Remove parts that he could chew or choke on (drawstrings, loose sequins, et cetera), and ensure that there's nothing hanging off the costume that could snag on stuff.

Go with the natural look. Make-up or face paint is a bad idea – it can irritate a pet's skin, and worse, it can get licked off and cause digestive distress. (Plus, it's more likely to get all over you and your furniture than to stay on your pet!) Even non-toxic make-up isn't worth the risk.

Stick to safe snacks. Most pet owners know that chocolate in any form – and particularly baker's or dark chocolate – is a big no-no for dogs. It's harmful to cats as well, and if your pet wolfs down a whole wrapped candy, it could cause a blockage. Keep all candy in a safe place, and let your pets celebrate with doggy snacks or cat treats instead.

Decorate with care. Keep edible décor like pumpkins and candy corn out of reach of curious paws and jaws. Inedible décor is still prime pouncing material for cats, though; hang the fake cobwebs and black-and-orange tinsel as high as you can manage.

Candles add spooky ambiance – but they can also get knocked over by enthusiastic tails (or set those tails ablaze). Switch to battery-operated versions instead; your local hardware store should have a selection of kitten-safe non-flame options.

Skip trick-or-treating. Your dog could get spooked by a costume (his or others'), new and unfamiliar people in the neighborhood, or going to strange houses. If you simply must show off her ladybug outfit, keep the outing short, and stick to the sidewalk. Better yet, take photos instead and let your pet stay home.

And bring outdoor pets inside for Halloween night. Extra traffic, candy dropped on the ground, trick-or-treaters teasing or chasing them – all these things can harm or freak out your pet (and a barking dog could scare people away from your front door). Invite them in for the evening.

Prepare for parties. Whether you're planning a Halloween party or just expecting lots of trick-or-treaters, a little pet-proofing prep can make the experience less stressful for the whole family.

Check the cages of smaller friends like gerbils and birds to make sure latches are secure; remove their habitats from common areas (i.e., your front hall).

Indoor-only pets like cats and small dogs should spend the evening behind closed doors – a back bedroom or storage area you make comfy with an old sweatshirt to nap on, and/or a new toy to play with. Identify and close off escape routes; post a sign on the door, and lock it if you can.

Larger, more social animals should be leashed. Some children have no experience with dogs, and can get scared even by a friendly canine overture. If your dog tends to jump or bark when she gets excited, consider crating her for the party, or installing a dog gate.

Let guests know they shouldn't feed your pets; a small sign on the snack table should do it.

With all of these tips your at your disposal, there is no way everyone can't have a safe and happy halloween....so let's go trick or treating, have a great time and always remember saftey first...It's Halloween, everyone's entitled to one good scare...

October Snow...

Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather...

I just could not resist this.  It's October 29th two more days until Halloween and an early storm pelts East Coast with wet, heavy snow.  Happy Halloween all...

An unusually early and powerful nor'easter along the East Coast began dumping several inches of wet, heavy snow Saturday that weighed down or toppled leafy trees and power lines and combined with high winds to knock out power to hundreds of thousands.


The storm came on a busy weekend for many, with trick-or-treaters going door-to-door in search of Halloween booty, hunting season opening in some states and a full slate of college and pro football scheduled...


Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella....

Fort Lauderdale Boat Show 2011....

 The more fun you have, the greater your value to yourself .... The more fun you share with others, the more fun you have... The most thoroughly wasted of all days is that on which one has not laughed..

Come October every year, Fort Lauderdale puts up the biggest boat show in the country, with hundreds and hundreds of boats on display it's a sight not to be missed.  If you are a boat lover and and even if you are not this is one amazing spectacle and worth seeing.  Price range of these boats can go all the way up to many millions of dollars.  Always very good to see what you can get for your money and of course what one can only dream of getting.

This year we do not have a boat on display, but a few years ago we had a beautiful 62' yacht and both Arvid and I worked the show where we met amazing people and where we also were privy to seeing some of the most amazing boats.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the "Yachting Capital of the World" will host the 52nd Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show on October 27-31, . Show exhibits range from yacht builders and designers to exotic cars and brokerage yachts. A wide variety of boats and sea vessels will be on display including runabouts, sportfishers, high performance boats, center consoles, cabin cruisers, flats boats, skiffs, express cruisers, sailing yachts, motor yachts, bowriders, catamarans, ski boats, jet boats, trawlers, inflatables, canoes, and extraordinary superyachts.

Covering six locations and over 3 million square feet of space, the show's transportation network of bus shuttles, water taxis, and riverboats ensures attendees can easily navigate the boat show and its expansive waterways system....now all we want is no rain and the weekend is already set in motion.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the fun is in having lots to do and not doing it....

This weekend I realized again how wonderful it is to be in Florida and how lucky we are to be living in The Sunshine State.  It was just a beautiful day with a cool breeze and perfect for the top down and just cruise all around town...I realized that most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.  We have made up our minds to enjoy life, no matter what we do or where we are....

Thought Of The Day...

We cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...

The truth is that most of us these days have a past that has shaped our present and most likely our futures.  They say, you have to know the past to understand the present.  Looking back, I sometimes ask myself if I would have done certain things differently?  Would I go back into time if I could and change certain events?  This I will never know, but every once in a while I drift into a place where my mind takes over and I just wonder what if..."What you need to know about the past is that no matter what has happened, it has all worked together to bring you to this very moment. And this is the moment you can choose to make everything new. Right now"  If I were to change my past, I would have missed out on a life with Arvid and Brutus.....Not an option.  I am happy with it and with my choices.  Some events have been difficult and some maybe could have been done differently, but now it's part of me and part of my life...

Weekends are a bit like rainbows; they look good from a distance but disappear when you get up close to them..have a good weekend all.  It sure goes by too fast.  Some say why wait for the weekend to have fun?  I have to say it is always a good time to have fun and enjoy life the day does not matter.

One day at a time--this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past for it is gone; and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful it will be worth remembering....

The one thing I always try to make clear to everyone around me is that life is very fragile.  One day you have it all and the next day it can be taken away just like that.  I like most was not prepared for this but there was a time in  my life that it happened and you do what you have to do to survive.  At that time I made myself a promise NEVER to take anything nor anyone for granted and to enjoy each day as if it were my last.  I don't always follow this rule, but we try as much as possible to enjoy life to the fullest.

When I met Arvid he was a workaholic...everything was only work, work and work.  Today he is more into enjoying our time together, doing, seeing and experiencing life to the fullest.  I would like to think that this is due to me and my influence...

As it has been said, "What makes life worth living is knowing that one day you'll wake up and find the person that makes you happier than anything in the whole world. So don't ever lose hope and give up, everything turns out okay and the good guy always wins"  I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel...

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away...do not take life too seriously.  You will never get out of it alive...

Happy!!

We tend to forget that happiness doesn't come as a result of getting something we don't have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have...

I am very happy.  Mom and dad have now been here in Florida a little over a week and we are having a great time with them.  I get to see them a little everyday and at the same time the four of us go out and have great times together.  It is always good to have them around us.  My parents have a way of bringing out the best in everyone around them...they always have and I know they always will.  I am very lucky because they love Arvid and I know he also cares a lot for them.  My dad and Arvid are good buddies and it makes me happy because it is not always that parents get along with the spouse of their children.

We have done so much in the last week and I am looking forward to the next few days with them.  Saturday we enjoyed the day at our place.  We had a good lunch prepared both by my mom and I and best of all we had an excellent time just talking.  It is so comfortable with them.  No stress for anyone...just love it and will miss them terribly when they are gone.  No need to say that our fridge is filled with food cooked by my mom for both Arvid and myself. 

Tomorrow will also be a great day for we plan on spending together all day long as well...yep the four of us, Arvid and I, mom and dad.  It goes with out say that I am lucky and truly thankful for what I have.

Your attitude decides whether you are happy or not. You can change your attitude.

Want to Look Younger? Please, Don't Do This with Your Hair...

Hair brings one's self-image into focus; it is vanity's proving ground.  Hair is terribly personal, a tangle of mysterious prejudices...

Interesting article in the beauty section today....if there is one thing that can really alter the appearance of a person be it for good or for bad it is ones hair.  A haircut, hair coloring...just have to be careful because we all want to enhance our natural assets and not let it make us look older and more haggard.  Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself. 

Be aware all for these haircuts and these hair colors:

It's too dark
Really dark, solid brown or black hair can look harsh or false, which ultimately makes you look older. Why? Because we tend to lose pigment, moisture and elasticity in the skin, hair, and eyes as we age.  To counteract that loss and restore the appearance of youth, it's best to warm up the hair with light to medium browns and highlights. Don't want to spend big bucks at a salon? Dye it at home using a no-muss/no-fuss kit.

I have seen many a young girls these days with beautiful hair except that their color choice has left them looking old and washed out...obviously many believe they look great, but sometimes it is hard to say "you look awful" and to be kind you tell a white lie and you say "it looks all right", this way everyone feels better..win-win.  A fine head of hair adds beauty to a good face, and terror to an ugly one.

Similarly, if your hair falls on the other side (we're talking platinum blonde to white), you can look washed out. Consider natural-looking shades that are somewhere in the middle of the color spectrum, or adding deeper lowlights to your blonde. Another tip: Avoid using too much bleach or lightener; it can give you an unnatural "frosted" effect, which also tacks on the years.

Remember that blunt (all one length) cut with bangs you had when you were in high school? Still have it? If so, it's time for an update. Dated hairstyles definitely age you. So pick a new style that's modern and best fits your face shape. Need a little help? Head to the salon.
It's dragging you down  

This can be a common problem for people who are either growing out their hair or have very long hair to begin with. If your hair becomes too heavy for its cut, it can create the illusion that your features are sagging. Also, the older you get, the less shine your hair tends to have -- and very long hair just draws attention to that. To avoid this, have your stylist trim and reshape your cut so it better fits your face shape while it's growing. If you have very long hair, break it up with some modern-looking soft layers or side bangs.

And by death, I mean ashy. Unless you have a lot of warmth in your hair -- meaning yellow, red, or orange undertones -- steer clear of cool, ashy shades, which have blue, green, or purple undertones. Ditto if your hair is already cool gray or white; you could end up with an undesirable pink, blue, or purple tint. Surprising tip: Smokers tend to have a lot of yellow in their hair.

I am very happy with my curly hair...not so much when i was a little girl growing up with sisters who all had very straight hair.  people wanted to know where I got so much hair from and so curly.  Today I know my hair is beautiful because I feel comfortable with it and that is all that matters.  It does help that Arvid loves it and just about anywhere we go I get compliments on my curls...Yes, I love my hair today...There is a saying that goes "Gentlemen prefer blondes... but gentlemen marry brunettes"

Women.... Who made 'em?  God must have been a... genius.  Their hair.  They say that the hair is everything, you know?  Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls, and just wanted to go to sleep forever?.....

FaceBook

Man is a make-believe animal: he is never so truly himself as when he is acting a part..man has always sacrificed truth to his vanity, comfort and advantage. He lives by make-believe....

Seriously, who will disagree if I say that FaceBook is a great outlet for many things.  Not necessarily all good, but still a place where one can make "friends" with someone in a different part of the world with just a tiny little click.  Where you can share thoughts and daily nonsense with just about hundreds of people you don't really know and who don't really know you or even care about what the heck you are doing, but that is the appeal for many of this Social Network known as FaceBook.  We can all express our thoughts, likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, etc.  Sometimes it is just an outlet that makes one feel better.  It is a way of reaching out to that person you care about or miss when at other times many don't know how else to do it.  It has helped so many around the world reunite with loved ones and honestly, it has also contributed to many not so good things...guess you can say you have to take the good with the bad.   Many a times people lie just to pretend that all is good with them, but just remember a lie may take care of the present, but it has no future....

As someone said "I like to pretend that every things alright because when everybody else thinks you're fine, sometimes you forget for awhile that you're not"  Facebook is a way I have seen many do this.  I don't claim to be the exception either

We play make believe, pretend to take ourselves and each other seriously - to love each other, hate each other - but then - it isn't true...

Thought Of The Day....

I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so you can learn to let go. Things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they're right. You believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself. And sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together...

I would love to say that I believe that everything happens for a reason, but I would be lying if I did.  There are so many things that has happened not only to me but to good people all around us and I honestly can't say I understand why it has happened.  This being said I do believe that each person makes their own destiny and each person has choices and how we make them will impact the rest of our lives...


As someone once said, "We have to learn to be our own best friends because we fall too easily into the trap of being our own worst enemies"

I believe that everything that you do bad comes back to you. So everything that I do that's bad, I'm going to suffer from it. But in my mind, I believe what I'm doing is right. So I feel like I'm going to heaven...

Don't Quit:)

Defeat doesn't finish a man, quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits...

We never realize how close we're to winning when we decide to quit.  Who has not had moments when everything seems just too much to bear, when it seems like it's not worth the fight anymore?  We all have these moments and for sure we have come close to quitting, but the true winner is that person who perseveres and just keeps going...just like the energizer bunny.  There is enough time for quitting when one is dead, but as long as you have breath in you, you should never give up.

Picture Of The Day...

The cat could very well be man's best friend but would never stoop to admitting it...

They say that man's best friend is his doggie...in our case man's best friend is our Kitty, Brutus.....They also say if animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much, unlike so many people who just talk for talks sake and most of the time it's just a waste of your time or just out of politeness one has to listen and pretend to enjoy an otherwise senseless conversation...it goes with the territory I guess.  Brutus and Arvid have a special bond and it is just amazing to watch these two interact.  I know also that this bond exists with many pet owners and their pets...it's just beautiful to see man and animal together.  Brutus sleeps in the curve of Arvid's arm at night and though he gets tired Arvid just holds him for as long as he, Brutus is laying there...that's LOVE.

A cat can be trusted to purr when she is pleased, which is more than can be said for human beings....

Thought For Today....

Many may have already seen this on my FB wall, but for those that haven't here it is.  I think this is so very true and thought it was worth repeating.   Its so funny how the people who know the least about you, have the most to say...as some one said "I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him".

America's Most Shark-Infested Beaches....

 Remember my strong advice, just remember to always think twice...

Not something we really look forward to hearing especially if we frequent these beaches, but knowledge is powerful and what we do about it is up to us.  Just remember, knowledge is of no value unless you put it into practice, so with that in mind, I give to you a list of beaches that supposedly are the most shark invested in the USA....

Deadly attacks are rare, but watch out for fins on these shorelines.


While shark attacks are rare, they’ve been on the rise, with 79 attacks in 2010—the most dangerous year for shark attacks in a decade. Here is a list of some notable locations for shark attacks in 2010 and 2011. Although no one beach is more likely to be prone to shark attacks than another, these are mostly part of larger areas known to be where sharks and humans come into contact with each other.

Surf Beach, North of Santa Barbara, California:  Shark attacks are relatively common in the waters off northern California, but one attack in central California in 2010 drew a lot of attention. Nineteen-year-old surfer Luke Ransom was catching large waves in the waters off Vandenberg Air Force base near Santa Barbara, when he was attacked by an 18-foot great white. The surfer did not get back to shore in time and bled to death.

 New Smyrna Beach, Florida: There were 13 unprovoked shark attacks – one fatal – in Florida in 2010, statistically the most likely place in the world to get bitten by a shark. That likelihood shows no sign of abating this year. In addition to an attack on dive instructor Daniel Webb on June 12, the most recent attack was on a 19-year-old swimmer in New Smyrna Beach on June 6, the third person this year to get bitten by a shark in part of the so-called “red triangle.”


Topsail Island, North Carolina:  North Carolina has had a moderate amount of shark attacks in the past decade, including five last year, up from one the year before. One of those victims was Carley Schlentz, a 13-year-old girl from Greensboro, N.C., who was attacked near Topsail Island. She was bitten twice before she made it out of the water, and required 60 stitches to close the wounds.

Fripp Island, South Carolina:  Shark attacks are relatively rare in East Coast waters north of Florida, and in South Carolina particularly, but last year the state was the site of four attacks, all of which were non-fatal. One of those sharks attacked six-year-old Ella Morris, who was playing on a boogie board with her father when a shark bit into Ella’s leg and dragged her underwater. Ella’s father chased the shark away with the board and ran ashore to a nearby firehouse for help. Ella’s wound required 22 stitches but she survived the attack.

Lyman Beach, Kona, Hawaii:  Hawaii is also one of the world’s hotspots for shark encounters. The islands were the location of four unprovoked attacks last year and a few this year as well. Two of those attacks occurred within three days of each other in the waters near Lyman Beach in Kona, the first recorded attacks in that part of the big island. Theresa Fernandez was surfing in the waters off Kona when she felt something hard hit the bottom of her board. When the rear of her surfboard was pulled under the water, she paddled furiously to get away from what she knew was a shark. Luckily, Fernandez and another surfer, Alayna DeBina, both escaped their encounters without injury.

If you are like me and you love the water, I doubt this will actually stop you from getting back in the beach and enjoying the pleasures of swimming in the ocean, but I hope you will be a bit more careful and pay more attention to where you swim and surf....some beaches are just not meant for swimmers:))

Amazing Facts About Cats!

If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much...

Most of us probably have at least one pet in our homes.  We happen to have Brutus...
Brutus came to us in 2006 and our lives have never been the same again.  I am a cat person, but Arvid has never been one to fancy having a pet....least of all a cat.  Ask him today and you will hear an entirely different story.  Just a few minutes ago Arvid said to me he does not understand how some people can just abandon their kitties....He said he would rather give up on something than abandon our Brutus...not that this would happen, but it was cute to see him so attached to little Brutus...they have bonded like true buddies.  Brutus follows him everywhere and if Arvid does not show up Brutus just waits until Arvid moves...very cute to see.

Picture Of The Day....

Summer is like the ultimate one-night stand.. hot as hell, totally thrilling, and gone before you know it....
We are soon about to leave Chicago. We have had a wonderful summer and now it's time to head back to Florida and to warmer weather.  We are both happy and a bit sad at the same time to leave, but we both agree that the cold is not for us.  Brutus has also enjoyed Chicago and is also now starting to feel the cold (this according to Arvid).  We have turned the heat on in the bathroom and Brutus sits on the mat just laying and stretching out under the heat bulb...reason to think he is cold. 

For now it's goodbye Chicago...Every goodbye makes the next hello closer.  It’s all said and done, it’s real, and it’s been fun.  Until next summer...



The tans will fade, but the memories will last forever....I've had the time of my life...

Thought For Today...

You've gotta dance like there's nobody watching, Love like you'll never be hurt, Sing like there's nobody listening, And live like it's heaven on earth...

Life can often take us on a wild roller-coaster ride... without our consent! Don't get me wrong. I love roller coasters, but I'm not overly found of double-loops and corkscrews!

Like I have said before, we all carry with us our personal story.  I just want you to know that not because you have gone through a  bad experience once or maybe more than once means everything and everyone is bad....life has a way of showing us the good side of things and people also...it's up to us to take the chance and to discover it.  Thank you Sonal....


In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: it goes on...You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough..
